Exam Essay Questions:  Phloem Transport

  1. Describe the phloem. Include a discussion of the materials transported, rate of transport, anatomy, and p-protein. Explain how aphids helped to learn about phloem function and why is phloem transport is difficult to study.

  2. Explain the mechanism by which solutes are transported in the phloem.  Include a discussion of the Pressure-Flow hypothesis and its analogy to a double osmometer.

  3. Explain how solutes are loaded/unloaded in the phloem (via apoplastic and/or symplastic transport).  Include H+-ATPase, K+, sucrose/H+ co-transport in your response.
