Interactive Web Functions
To make Biochemistry Online interactive and encourage its in-depth use, I have imbedded several features that require response from you as you read the material.
1. Pre-Class Assessment
You will find this feature in many of the Biochemistry Online sections. Typically, I will assign a particular chapter section for the next class. Before the start of the next class, click on the Pre-Class assessment and answer the questions which allow you to do a self-assessment as to how well you understood the material and and if there were particular sections that you had significant difficulty in understanding . Your responses will be sent to me so I can read them before class. In this way I'll be able to see if you have problems with particular concepts, and if so, I can address them more thoroughly in class. After we discuss the material in class, I may post a web file with everyone's response to the question. I highly encourage you to find a partner in the class and submit one response (with both your names) per question. As a trial, before class two, click on the link above and following instructions! Very important: This features does not seems to work in Netscape. Please use Internet Explorer. Report any problems to me by email.
2. Check-in Time
Student often don't solicit help when they need it most. Based on my experience, many of you will not make use of office hours or appointments. In order to facilitate more 1 on 1 contact, I will imbed Check-In's at the start of each new chapter in Biochemistry Online. I'll ask you a series of questions:
how well you understand the material
what, if any, specific topics you are having trouble understanding
would like to setup an appointment to help you with your understanding.
This is meant to help people who don't usually come in for help. Please don't let this option stop you from setting up an appointment.
3. Pre-Class Questions
These questions will be found immediately after an animated cartoon figure pushing a stone up a hill, as shown below.
Click on the question and post your responses as directed. As a trial, before class two, click on the link above and following instructions! Very important: This features does not seems to work in Netscape. Please use Internet Explorer. Report any problems to me by email.
I will create a spread sheet to monitor participation in these questions.
4. WebCT Quiz
WebCT Online Quiz: test quiz
WebCT is a program I will use for on-line, self-help quizzes. Select the hyperlink to go to an WebCT. When you enter the link to WebCT, you will be prompted for a usrname (ID) and password. Follow the instructions below exactly:
Your WebCT ID

Your initial password =
your student ID number, without dashes - e.g. 333445555
If you have previously been in a WebCT course, your password will be whatever
you had used
previously.
Log-in instructions are available at http://www.csbsju.edu/itservices/guides/webct/webctlogin.htm

You will go to your personalized WebCT Homepage. In the upper left, you will see all the course available to you. Click on Biochemistry, which will take you to a new page. Scroll down to the bottom and select Online Quizzes and Surveys. You will see a series of quizzes. Select the appropriate one, in this case, Test Quiz (which comes with the software). Follow the prompts. I can't directly link to the quizzes so you will have to take this long-about way.
These quizzes are for your benefit. I will not grade them, but I will record if you have taken them (which I will consider a sign of interest and participation in the course). I only have a few quizzes online as of now (1/14/02), but I plan to add them slowly during the semester.
