Biology 235/236:  Human Anatomy and Physiology
Lab resources

1.  Histology lab resources:

  1. http://www.medinfo.ufl.edu/year1/histo/ - a site with good histology review; can use it in a review mode or quiz mode to simulate a practical; will be useful throughout the course anytime we study histology.
  2. http://www.meddean.luc.edu/lumen/MedEd/Histo/frames/histo_frames.html - very good descriptions and photomicrographs; for now focus on the four basic tissues but if you take time to explore this link you'll see a lot of other histology material for other systems and many sample precticals; you can run the site on lesson mode or quiz mode.
  3. http://teaching.anhb.uwa.edu.au/mb140/ - a great site from a histology course at University of Western Australia. Covers most systems -- pay special attention to lab/lecture notes and large images links. Again while you should focus on study of four basic tissues for now, this site is a great companion for the entirety of this course.

2.  Blood resources:

The following sites are useful in your study of histology of blood cells and blood typing:

Strongly recommended:

http://www.mc.Vanderbilt.Edu/histo/blood/ - very good descriptions and photomicrographs (light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy [TEM]) of various formed elements of blood; a very useful tool, great pictures!!

http://www.meddean.luc.edu/lumen/MedEd/Histo/frames/h_frame5.html - very good descriptions and photomicrographs of blood; if you tak e time to explore this link you'll see a lot of other histology material for other systems and many sample precticals.

http://www.histology.anatomy.wisc.edu/htm/tlymbase.htm - again some great photomicrographs of blood cells; can view this in "labelled mode" or "practical mode".

http://www.medinfo.ufl.edu/year1/histo/ - another site with good histology review; can use it in a review mode or quiz mode to simulate a practical.

http://www.umds.ac.uk/tissue/bludgrp.html - a very good discussion on blood groups and blood typing.

Other interesting resources:

http://www.cjp.com/blood/index.html - extensive resource on hematology; databases of various resources, case studies, and image archives of many pathologies.

http://www.aabb.org/ - a lot of interesting facts about blood and blood banking--whole blood and blood components, donor screening and deferral, autologous blood, transfusion-transmitted diseases, etc.

http://oncolink.upenn.edu/cancer_news/1994/oct94_750_2.html - discusses various alternatives to regular blood transfusions.

http://www.leukemia.org/ - the Leukemia Society of America site; contains a wealth of information on this tragic disease -- every ten minutes a child or an adult will die of leukemia or related complications.

http://wsrv.clas.virginia.edu/~rjh9u/aip.html - sites and links on porphyrias.

http://www.thalassemia.org/ - discussion and resorces on thalassemias.

http://www-rics.bwh.harvard.edu/sickle/ - great information and discussion on thalassemia and sickle cell disease.

http://www.neutropenia.ca/what.html - information on neutropenia.

http://www.icondata.com/health/pedbase/files/HEMOPHIL.HTM - information on hemophilia A.

http://www.icondata.com/health/pedbase/files/HEMOPHI2.HTM - information on Hemophilia B.

3.  Cardiovascular resources

Recommended:

http://sln.fi.edu/biosci/heart.html - an overview of the functional anatomy of heart, blood vessels, blood; good text but no photos.

http://www.cvmg.com/education/images.html - some absolutely great images (X-rays) of heart at various phases of cardiac cycle; some good images of cardiac pathologies.

http://www.meddean.luc.edu/lumen/MedEd/Histo/frames/h_frame8.html - an absolutely great histology site with great text, discussion, photomicrographs; can use in a tutorial mode, practical mode, etc., a must! This link takes you straight to the heart/blood vessel component.

http://www.anatomy.wisc.edu/histo/htm/tcvbase.htm - another great histolgy site with discussuion and photomicrographs; again can use in a tutorial or review mode.

http://www.medinfo.ufl.edu/year1/histo/ - a site with good histology review; can use it in a review mode or quiz mode to simulate a practical.

Other sites:

http://www.bu.edu/cohis/cardvasc/cvd.htm - a site that deals with various aspects of cardiovascular diseases -- what are they, how to prevent them, etc. It's pretty basic as far as this class goes, but good for the lay people and the general public.

http://www.cardiologycompass.com/ - search engine for cardiovascular topics.

http://www.medmatrix.org/Index.asp - another search engine for many medical/basic science topics.
