Scope:
_______________

*       Chapters 5-9 in Kontakte and in the Quia Online Workbook
*
       Intensive work on conversational situations for travel and study abroad situations.
*
       A thorough study of German word order, sentence negations, verbs in all the tenses, the imperative, adjective endings, prepositional phrases, prepositional objects of verbs, modal auxiliaries, time expressions and sentence conjunctions.
*
       Practical readings and frequent sustained speaking practice for daily situations.
*
       Introduction to works by Goethe, Eichendorff, Rilke and others.
*
       Intensive vocabulary building based on course readings and our textbook, Kontakte
*
       Introduction to the musical traditions of German Lieder, folksongs and dance.
*
       Preparation for future studies in German and other modern languages.
 

Aims:

*       It is my hope that you will learn to enjoy the process of learning languages and living in other cultures – in this case the German-Austrian-Swiss cultures -- as a lifelong gift. 
*
       In speaking you will be able to ask and answer questions, initiate and respond to simple statements, and maintain face-to-face conversation. You will be able to perform such tasks as introducing self, ordering a meal, asking directions, and making purchases.
*
       You will be able to write creatively by recombining learned vocabulary and structures into simple sentences on familiar topics.
*
       You will be able to describe significant differences and similarities between US and German/Austrian/Swiss cultural settings in writing and in conversation.
 

Assignments:

*       Speaking, reading, listening and writing exercises from Kontakte and from the Kontakte-Quia Online Workbook.
*
       Preparation of skits based on dialogues and vocabulary from course readings.
*
       Preparation for frequent dictation and vocabulary quizzes and for the Midterm and Final overviews.
*
       Learning, writing and reciting a couple of German poems by heart.
