  • Intensive work on conversational situations for travel and study aborad situations.
  • A thorough study of German word order, sentence negations, verbs in all the tenses, the imperative, adjective endings, prepositional phrases, prepositional objects of verbs, modal auxuliaries, time expressions and sentence conjunctions.
  • Practical readings and frequent sustained speaking practice for daily situations.
  • Introduction to works by Goethe, Eichendorff, Rilke, Bachmann, Novak and others.
  • Intensive vocabulary building based on course readings and our textbook, German in Review.
  • Introduction to the musical traditions of German Lieder, folksongs and dance.
  • Gramamtical and stylistic analyses of pratical and literary German texts.
  • Preparation for future studies in German and other modern languages.
Aims:

  • In speaking you will be able to ask and answer questions, initiate and respond to simple statements, and maintain face-to-face conversation. You will be able to perform such tasks as introducing self, ordering a meal, asking directions, and making purchases.
  • You will be able to read simple, connected texts dealing with a variety of basic and social needs.
  • You will be able to write creatively by recombining learned vocabulary and structures into simple sentences on familiar topics.
  • You will be able to describe significant differences and similarities between US and German/Austrian/Swiss cultural settings in writing and in conversation.
  • You will be able to explain German word order, sentence negations, verbs in all the tenses, the imperative, adjective endings, prepositional phrases, prepositional objects of verbs, modal auxuliaries, time expressions, sentence conjunctions and uses of the subjunctive mood..
  • You will understand the basic literary and artisitic expressions of German Romanticism.
  • You will understand the importance of grammar for excellent writing, speaking and thinking in English as well as German and other modern languages.

  • Learning, writing and reciting German poems by heart.
