How to Get Umlauts!
Method One:
This is the method I have been using because once the keyboard is set, it's so easy to remember:
For Windows, go to control panel and select Regional and Language Options. Click the Languages tab, then click on Details and scroll down to English (United States) - United States-International and click on Add...
Once
you have set the keyboard, umlauts are easy. Simply press the quotation
mark key (with SHIFT) and then type the letter you want. (For example
" + a
will give you ä.
To get the ß
(scharfes s),
simply hold down the RIGHT Alt key (to the
right of the spacebar)
and hit the s-key. That will give you ß
-- once the international keyboard is
set.
Here is what the final dialog box looks like:
Method Two (for Microsoft Word only):
Press the
three keys
Shift+Control+:(colon)
and then the letter
you want umlauted.
For the
ß,
Shift+Control+&, then type S.
