Psychology of Adjustment to Modern Life

This course is meant to provide majors and non-majors with an opportunity to study psychology mainly as it relates to themselves. Issues covered will include personality, stress, coping, social influence, love, marriage, career development , sexuality, and psychotherapy. The general approach will rely upon the empirical tradition in psychology, meaning relying upon the data, not beliefs, attitudes, superstitions, etc to answer questions.

Learning Goals of this Course

  1.  
  2. Students will be able to understand and discuss the basic elements of the empirical approach to the study of behavior relevant to the problems of adjustment in today's complex world
  3. Students will be able to identify and define experimental research, correlational research, naturalistic observation, and case studies
  4. Each student will develop a personal mission statement that consists of a statement of your reasons for attending college, your goals for the future, and how these goals relate to your core values and beliefs
  5. Students will develop awareness of key choices they will be making now and in the future, and learn about the social, cultural, historical, and personal issues that may influence these choices. They will also become aware of the responsibility they have for making choices and dealing with their consequences
  6. Students will have FUN and enjoy the course while increasing self-understanding, self-awareness, tolerance for the behavior of others, and the effectiveness of your own behavior
