COURSE OVERVIEW
Every psychology major has heard about the
MMPI, the Wechsler intelligence scales, the Meyers-Briggs Type
Indicator, or the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). These are important
tests used frequently in counseling, therapy, and applicant
screening. Just what is it about these tests, or any test, that makes
it a good and useful assessment instrument? This is the main theme in
"Tests and Measures" which is a dry and uninteresting title for a
course that is really at the heart of the discipline of psychology.
Any student who intends to pursue graduate studies in the areas of
clinical or counseling will take several courses in this area during
their graduate career, but assessment is an issue that will be
important in almost any career. When you enter the world of
employment, you will find that it is a powerful tool for helping any
business grow or any agency demonstrate its effectiveness.
Accreditation agencies for CSB/SJU now require that we assess whether
we accomplish the goals set forth in the catalog. Thus, assessment is
a key component of our daily lives. That's why it is so important for
psychology majors to receive an introduction to this topic. One of
the reasons psychology is such a powerful force in society and such a
popular major is that its practitioners have become experts in the
art and science of assessment. My goals are to show you how widely
the principles of tests and measures can be applied to understanding
key issues in psychology and other disciplines.
