Reproduction - Some Study Questions

Required Reading:

Goal:
The goal of this unit is to obtain a basic understanding of all facets of human reproduction.

ObjectivesUpon completion of this unit you should be able to:

  1. understand the importance of reproduction
  2. compare and contrast sexual and asexual reproduction
  3. identify at least three methods of asexual reproduction and give examples of each
  4. describe the process of oogenesis.  where does it occur? when?
  5. describe the process of spermatogenesis.  where does it occur?
  6. compare and contrast oogenesis and spermatogenesis.
  7. identify the function of the major structures in the human female reproductive tract:  cervix, uterus, oviduct, ovary, vagina
  8. identify the function of the major structures in the human male reproductive tract:  testis, epididymus, vas deferens, bulbourethral gland, prostate gland, scrotum, seminal vesicles
  9. describe the menstrual cycle including uterine and ovarian events, and the functions of the hormones involved
  10. explain how the pregnancy test work.
  11. explain how the ovulation test works
  12. explain how each of the following contraceptives methods work:  natural family planning, condom, foam, diaphgram, IUD, cervical cap, pill, douche, sponge, tubal ligation, vasectomy, coitus interruptus, and some of the newer methods.
  13. for each of the following hormones - gnRH, FSH, LH, estrogen, progesterone, hCG, testosterone  - be able to identify its (a) source, (b) target, (c) action, and (d) what the acronym stands for.
  14. discuss evolutionary strategies for successful reproduction
