Class Leader
General Information: Once during the semester you will be assigned to be our
"Class Leader". The purpose of this assignment is for you to take a
little responsibility for our class activities and to provide a structure for
you to do a little research on a course topic. These are "easy points" to
obtain and can help your grade. I won't remind you when it is your turn,
check the schedule. When you are class leader, it is your responsibility to:
- Choose the music for the day - to be played at the beginning of class.
Bring in a CD, or iPod, and have it in the player ready five minute before class.
- Choose the "Greeting for the Day"
(or create your own)
- Choose the "Quote of the Day" and write it on the board.
This quote should be either biological (i.e., related to the course) or
inspirational. To find a quote, I have a large selection in a file in my office.
Or, you can visit the "Quote Jar" in the Bailey Herbarium or any quote website.
You may not reuse a quote used by a previous student.
- Provide a reference citation for a
relatively recent article that is related
(at least distantly) to the topic of the
class/unit. Write this reference on the board using the proper
citation format. Articles must be in standard 'lab report' format
in a peer-reviewed journal. Permissible sources include: (1)
articles from a journal in JSTOR (which is available through the
CSB/SJU Library homepage);
(2) articles from a scholarly peer-reviewed journal in Academic Search
Premier (also available through the CSB/SJU Library homepage); or (3) articles from print journals in either
Alcuin or Clemens libraries (simply browse through the areas where new
journals/magazines are housed). If you are in doubt whether an article is acceptable,
contact me.
- There are many potential ways to
cite a scientific reference. The format that we will use for citing a
journal article is: Author AB, Author BC (date) Title of article.
Title of Journal Volume (number, if provided): inclusive page
numbers. Here's an example: Saupe SG (2006) Making maple syrup
at St. John's: Records show shifts in the 'Sticky Business.' Headwaters
23: 25 - 38. Do not include a web citation for your article - although
you may have found it on line, the article is from a journal and we will
focus on the journal citation.
- Print a copy of the
grading rubric for this
assignment. Complete this form and then turn it in to me with a hard copy of the
article and the completed Article Analysis form.
The forms do not need to be typed - HOWEVER, they must be easily legible or
I will deduct record as zero anything I can't easily read.
- Be timekeeper - sound the gong to
start class and when there is five minutes remaining. Also make sure we stay focused -
ring the gong if we get
off on a tangent.
- Make sure that the attendance sheet and stickers get passed out
- A schedule of
class leaders is posted in our course web site.
