MITIGATION FOR CRAWLSPACES

**To get a definition, place your cursor over the BURGUNDY words.**

There are several ways available to help lower the Radon level in your home, please consider one of the following types of MITIGATION systems.

Homes with a crawlspace under them may often times have a much higher Radon level than other homes simply because the ground under the home may be completely open to the earth.  Without proper ventilation, Radon may easily enter your home in.

Ventilating:  A crawlspace may be ventilated PASSIVELY or ACTIVELY.  Crawlspace ventilation lowers indoor Radon levels both by reducing the homes suction on the soil and by diluting the Radon beneath the house.  Natural ventilation in a crawlspace is achieved by opening vents or installing additional vents.  Active ventilation uses a fan to blow the air through the crawlspace instead of relying on natural air circulation.  In colder climates like Minnesota, for either natural or active crawlspace ventilation, water pipes in the crawlspace need to be insulated against the cold.  It may also be beneficial to add insulation to the bottom of the house to protect against heat loss through the floor.

Sub-membrane Depressurization:  This method involves covering the earth floor with a heavy plastic sheet.  A vent pipe and fan are then used to draw the Radon from under the sheet and vent it to the outdoors.

*PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT YOUR HOME SHOULD BE TESTED AFTER INSTALLING ANY MITIGATION SYSTEM TO MEASURE IF AND HOW WELL THE SYSTEM IS WORKING.  BOTH MEASUREMENTS SHOULD TAKE PLACE IN THE SAME AREA AND UNDER THE SAME CONDITIONS.*
