The Great Books Experience at Saint John's and Saint Ben's Dear Students Interested in Great Books, The
Honors Great Books/Great Ideas course is a year-long discussion-based
seminar focused on some of the world’s greatest works of literature,
philosophy, and intellectual history.
In this
seminar an extraordinary group of eager and intelligent students becomes
an engaged learning community, enhancing one another’s understanding,
appreciation, and enjoyment of the world's greatest books. Students
selected for the course purchase a personal library of 100 books, most
of which will be treated on some way during the year. Works
include the all-time greats such as Homer, Sophocles, Tolstoy,
Dostoevsky, Dickens, Austen, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Plato, Nietzsche,
Kafka, Goethe, Flaubert, Faulkner,
and Woolf, as well as contemporary selections such as Morrison, Byatt,
Saramago, Gordimer, Davies and Ishiguro. It’s an unparalleled
experience, one not to be missed. Students interested in this seminar
may contact Fr. Mark Thamert for more information.
