Review: Exam #3 - F'07 

General:
    The format of this exam will be very similar to the previous exams.  It will be include a mixture of objective (e.g., multiple choice, definition, fill-in-blank) and subjective (short answer) questions.  You will need a pencil to fill in the computer-scored sheet for the multiple choice questions.  You may use a pencil or pen for the remainder of the exam (but I strongly recommend pencil).  The exam is designed to last one hour.  In general, the exam could include:  (1) anything covered in class; and (2) any study sheets, articles, handouts or other materials used/assigned in class.  I try to ask an equal number of questions about each class.  

    The main topics that we covered that will be included on this exam are photosynthesis, cell cycle, mitosis, meiosis and genetics.  To help prepare for the exam you may want to check out:  (1) questions at the end of each chapter in the textbook; (2) the quizzes from the website for the textbook; (3) my past exams (posted online); and (4) my study guides.  As you know, i think concept maps are a great way to prepare for exams.  For example, can you create a concept map with the following terms/concepts/ideas:  gene, allele, locus, phenotype, genotype, homozygous, heterozygous, test cross, linkage, crossing over, tetrad (bivalent), chiasma, Punnett square, 3:1 ratio, 1:1 ratio, 9:3:3:1 ratio, 1:1:1:1 ratio, sex-linked, P, F1, F2?

     As a general rule, the exam questions come directly from the notes & in class activities.  Thus, focus on getting a good set of notes during class.  Use the "Presidential Notes" and online notes for each topic as general guides to what is important.  Use the textbook primarily as a reference to help understand what we discussed in class.  

Photosynthesis - This unit describes the process by which plants produce carbohydrates in the chloroplast. 

Cell Cycle - This unit describes the general cell cycle and mitosis.

Cell Sex & Meiosis - This unit features the process of sexual reproduction at the cellular level and the mechanism of meiosis.

Genetics - This unit highlights mechanisms of inheritance.
