Here is a model of methylcyclohexane in axial conformation. After it stops spinning, you can grab it with your mouse and move it around. You can also choose different views by clicking the buttons below. While looking, notice that one of the hydrogens on the methyl group is close to two of the axial hydrogens on the cyclohexane ring.  This interaction is a source of steric strain.
