Tobacco Smoke
A major source of indoor air pollution. (Smith, 2000)
Many public areas are restricting smoking indoors to respect the public’s health.
Healthy People 2010 risk reduction objective: reduce to no more than 15% the proportion of children aged 6 and younger who are regularly exposed to tobacco smoke in the home. (Smith, 2000)
According to the CDC, “in 1993, 9 million preschool children lived at home with at least one smoker.” (Smith, p.709)
Second hand smoke is a major cause of : (Smith, 2000)
- Lung cancer
- Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis)
- Respiratory difficulties (wheezing)
- Increased symptoms in asthmatics
- Associated with SIDS
