Carbon Monoxide

• Nurses should recommend the use of carbon monoxide detectors in the home.

• Symptoms of exposure: (Smith, 2000)

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Continued exposure can result in coma or death.

• Sources of poisoning: (Smith, 2000)

  • Improperly vented furnaces.
  • Blocked chimneys
  • Automobile exhaust
