The goal of this class is to consider ways of
conceptualizing and re-conceptualizing the literary and
cultural history of the United States. Towards that goal, as
we read from a wide range of texts, we will think about the
following questions:
|
|
-
How was literature symptomatic and/or diagnostic of the
fantasy of “America”?
-
How
do we understand the colonial encounter?
-
How
did literature of the "Enlightenment" question what is
essential to our nature?
-
How
did literature investigate the paradoxes of "freedom"?
-
How
is a "national" identity imagined or contested by
literature?
-
How
do we understand antebellum culture in the context of
debates over slavery?
-
What
was (or is) a feminist literature?
-
What
is the relationship among individuals, communities, and
labor?
