I. Introduction

Lactose Permease is produced by the lac Y gene, and transports the ß-galactoside into E. coli. This protein has 12 α-helices which span the cell membrane. The ligand, thiodigalactoside (TDG), is an analog of lactose, and is shown in spacefill in the selections below.
