Purpose: 

CSB/SJU have developed a summer research exchange program between the College of St. Benedict (CSB)/St. John's University (SJU), USA, and Southwest University (SWU), China to continue and to strengthen the relationship between the institutions, and to provide busy science majors  and other research students an opportunity to study and travel abroad.  We would like to expand the program to include non-science summer research students in Summer 2009.

Preliminary CSB/SJU Faculty Advisors for Summer 2009

Finances:

Support: CSB/SJU students will receive the same salary paid to CSB/SJU students who participate in the 10 week residential undergraduate research program at CSB/SJU. You will receive your first payment after you return from China.

Expenses:

Travel: CSB/SJU and SWU students will pay for their own transportation costs to and from CSB/SJU and SWU and within each country. CSB/SJU students will fly to and from China as a group on the same flight. Lodging, food, and sightseeing costs for the first weekend of sightseeing in Beijing, Shanghai, etc will be paid by students. Cost of weekend travel for students during their stay at SWU will be covered by the students.  Students must also cover the cost of their passports and visa application to China.

Room: Chinese students will be housed in the same facilities on campus as CSB/SJU students. CSB/SJU students who travel to SWU will be housed in the International Student Dormitory. Housing expenses for both CSB/SJU students at SWU and SWU students at CSB/SJU will be completely covered by the host institutions.

Board: The cost for food is covered for your at both CSB/SJU and at SWU.

Selection Process:

Students should submit application forms by Monday, January 26, 2009 to the 2009 Director of the Summer Exchange Program, Dr. Henry Jakubowski, Chemistry Department.

Once all applications have been collected the applicants will be interviewed by the Program Director and their potential faculty mentor.

Final selection of students into the program will occur no later than Monday, February 9, 2009 to ensure that student will have sufficient time to obtain passports and visas.

Selection Criteria for CSB/SJU Students

Application to the Program:

All forms except the Health and Dietary Information Form should be printed and filled out by the appropriate person, and mailed by campus mail to Dr. Henry Jakubowski, Chemistry Department, 245 Ardolf Science Center, CSB (Telephone: 5354).  Submit the Health and Dietary Information form online.

2. Department Form: Summer Undergraduate Research Application.

Please get these from the department in which the faculty member resided with whom you would like to do research.  You can get this from the Chair of that department.   It is very important that you talk with the faculty member with whom you would like to do research about your interest in the China Summer Exchange Program.

For forms from other departments, contact the appropriate Department Chair.

In addition to submitting this form to Dr. Jakubowski, please submit an additional departmental form to faculty in that department collecting student applications for their summer program.   Indicate on this form that you are applying for the Summer Exchange Program.

3. Office of Education Abroad (OEA) Forms

These forms are required for all students participating in study abroad experiences. 

4. Reference Form:

This form should be filled out by your faculty advisor or a faculty member in the department in which you plan to do research who knows you well enough to complete the form.  This may be the faculty with whom you would like to work.  It can be downloaded from this link. (pdf)

January 29 - February 8:  Interviews with faculty research advisors and Dr. Jakubowski

February 9: Notification about acceptance into the program sent via e-mail

February 27: Orientation Session 1

TBA: Orientation Session 2

TBA: Orientation Session 3

May 14: (Thursday) Departure for China

June 27: (Saturday) Return to USA

August 7: End of research at CSB/SJU; Chinese students return to China on Aug 8-10.
