Lab 1 & 2: Preparation and Administration of Parenteral Medications

TA Open Lab Set Up Instructions:

1. Prepare and set pit multiple vials of the following medications (using printed labels):

  • NPH and Regular Insulin
  • Heparin (10,000 Units/mL)
  • Compazine (10mg/2mL)
  • Ketorolac (30mg/1mL)

2. Prepare to check off students practice problems (answer key should in folder-they must get 100% for you to mark them as done)

3. Assist students in finding IM/SubQ sites and in drawing up correct dosages with correct technique and with correct needles/syringes

4. Students can do their Competency Validation Activity when they have been marked as done on the above

Competency Validation Activity

1. Students should use supplies from their kits for the actual Competency Validation

2. Randomly select one of the 6 MARs for the students to test out on (found in the Lab 1 & 2 folder)

3. Randomly pick a patient scenario (found in the Lab 1 & 2 folder).

4. Play the role as directed and have students use the MAR to correctly prepare, administer and document the medication.

5. Although this is not formally graded, this is your opportunity to determine if the student is prepared for their test out and to provide feedback while the student is completing the activity.

6. If the student makes multiple mistakes and seem unprepared, they should be allowed to finish with assistance but instructed to practice/read more and then try again.  You role is to "coach" the student to succeed on the video test out.

Video Test Out

1. Students should use the supplies located in the Nurse Server

2. Test outs will occur in Room 424. They should enter from 423 and exit into the hallway

3. Set up video camera, students should have their own tapes with them

4. Randomly select one of the 6 MARs for the students to test out on (found in the Lab 1 & 2 folder)

5. Randomly pick a patient scenario (found in the Lab 1 & 2 folder).

6. Play the role as directed and have students use the MAR to correctly prepare, administer and document the medication.

7. The students have 15 minutes to complete the entire test out

Labs 3: Drains

1. The students need to complete the Drain Worksheet.  You will need to sign off that they performed the skill and are able to answer the questions on the sheets. The sheet should be collected and placed in their folder.

Set up:

JP's and Foley Drains: The mannequins in the back all have JP drains and Foley catheters in.  In Cabinet 14 there is fake blood and serosang drainage and apple juice for urine.  To fill the JP's just fill a syringe and the syringe attach directly to the drain.  The foleys can be filled using the large catheter tipped syringe.  I filled them from the same spot used to empty them.  They also need to work on dressing these drains.  They should use the 4X4's for this which are in the cabinet above the sink (the dressing changes can be done in groups of 2 or 3). Students need to practice all of this!!

For nasogastric tube practice they should practice measuring, placing and securing them.

For oxygen practice they need to correctly attach a nasal cannula

Ambulatory Surgery Lab

1. The student will be doing an admission interview with you.  Copies of the appropriate surgical center form will be provided.

2  You need to sign an appropriately prepared informed consent (copies of the consent forms will be provided).

3.) No special setup required.

Lab 5: Professional communication, data gathering, and prioritizing in the acute care setting

1. The students will need to have the following items available.  One will be playing the role of the nurse and one as the patient.

  • Wear a gown

  • An NG tube

  • An IV pole, bag and tubing

  • Some type of surgical dressing

  • A Foley catheter

  • The sequential socks

  • Some type of drain (stryker, JP, chest tube)

2. Observe the “nurse” doing the focused assessment and ambulating their patient.  Give suggestions as needed.  Make sure they have a robe on their patients when they are walking and that they know how to unhook and reconnect all the equipment

Lab 7 & 8: Piggy, Push, Pump

Setup: Make sure that you have pumps with IV fluids running so that students can practice IV piggy back and setting up the rates and heights correctly. Have IV syringe pumps available as well. Make sure there are made-up vials of Morphine, Protonix, and Benadryl available.  They will also need fake flush syringes.

Each student should have a Passport that they need to complete and have you sign once they demonstrate competency.  They should use the video test out 2 criteria to guide their practice and your evaluation.

Here is a link to the MARs (Link). It will not necessarily be the same meds that they will see in the test out!

Video Test out #2 criteria (Link).

Competency Validation 1 (IVPB) & 2 (IVSP): Administer the IV piggy back and IVSP meds from the MAR following the Video test out #2 criteria AND verifying compatibility and hanging the bag or attaching the IVSP correctly.

Competency Validation 3 (IV Push) & 4 (Combo skill): Administer the IV push med on the MAR while the IVSP med or IVPB med is running.  Discuss what you would need to verify and DEMONSTRATE what to do if the meds were incompatible.

Lab 9: IV Medications

1. The students need to follow the scenario attached.  There is also a hand-written order that they should use to verify dosages and orders as they read through the scenarios.

2. They need the following medications set up and ready for them to infuse:

Anzemet 12.5mg/1cc

Pepcid (syringe pump) 20mg

Ancef 1gm IV piggy back

Lab 10

For chest tube practice they should review all of the parts using the sheets they got in class.  There are few questions they need to answer (you have the key in the TA folder).  I know that many of you have not had a lot of Chest tube exposure so this will be a reciprocal learning process (meaning they can teach you too!).  You should pull out the chest tube atriums in the back when open lab starts.  Attached is the handout used in class and the powerpoint in case you want to look them over or students need to see them.
