Catalog Description

Copenhagen-Berlin: Sustainability Leaders (1 credit, global flag).  This course will examine what sustainability is and how Denmark and Germany are leading the way in transforming economies and cultures towards greater sustainability.  We’ll study and compare policies and tour sites that reflect those policies such as wind power installations, reclaimed neighborhoods, sustainable transport and cultural activities that enhance a city’s resiliency in a rapidly changing world.  No knowledge of Danish, German, or Czech is necessary -- everyone is welcome!

Learning Goals

a. You will be able to speak and write about
what sustainability is, what makes a city sustainable, and specifically what makes Copenhagen and Berlin leaders in the world’s efforts to become more sustainable.
b. You will know about the policies adopted by a variety of organizations (e.g., the UN, and many others) to decide when something is deemed sustainable, and then show how particular aspects (such as architecture, transport, energy systems, waste systems, etc.) of both of these world cities show leadership in the transition to sustainability.

c. You will be able to plan visits to other cities and assess how far on the road to sustainability they have come.  Some may wish to make a career of the never-finished work of becoming more sustainable.  Finally, students will have the knowledge and tools to transform their own lives so that they have a smaller ecological footprint.

 A Note on Assignments

a)  Several quizzes onsite to capture the learning for the day.
b) Attendance: Grade will be affected if there are any unexcused absences from morning seminars and walking tours.
